COLLABORATION ∙IN SITU ∙ DANCE & PERFORMANCE

Agnieszka Ryszkiewicz & Bryan Campbell

2019

Château des Ducs de Bretagne, Nantes, France

For the opening of the dance festival Trajectoires.

In situ performance for 7 performers and 52 dancers from the University Dance company –  Passage(s), the pupils of the Conservatory of Nantes and the students from the Beaux-Arts Academy of Nantes

By juxtaposing mass-market consumer products with works by contemporary artists—works that cast a critical eye on forms of public sociality — Agnieszka Ryszkiewicz and students from the Nantes School of Fine Arts will devise a series of choreographic scavenger hunts. Acting as Dantean night watchmen, they will traverse the various centuries of Nantes’ history as well as the life stories of its inhabitants, offering visitors attending the evening opening a performative tour of the museum.

The collection of the Nantes History Museum stages the birth of a global economy through the prism of the history of the Port of Nantes. Resonating with Bryan Campbell’s interest in the « performance of economies, » dancers from the university company Passage(s) and students from the Nantes Conservatory of Music and Dance will collaborate with the choreographer to create choreographic « sculptures. » Becoming, in turn, an integral—yet ephemeral—part of the exhibition, these sculptures activate the economic histories that underpin the individual’s relationship to the collective and to history itself.
