In Dialogue with Spencer Finch
IN SITU ∙ PERFORMANCE
Frac des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, (Fr)
2010
Created for the Frac des Pays de la Loire in relation to the work of Spencer Finch Between the Moon and the Sea
In Dialogue with Spencer Finch is an outdoor fiction proposed in response to a specific work of art that has invited the outside landscape into the space of exhibition. In Dialogue… therefore stimulates the visitors to look or even go outside of the building itself.
A false moon indoors is reflected by a false sun outside. The first is suspended from the ceiling, swaying with each movement of the audience; the other weighs 200 kilos and can only be moved with great effort, pushed by about ten men and women.
Spencer Finch’s work offers visitors a timeless space, where the senses are drawn toward contemplation. This space invites stillness, invites one to linger.
Our proposal directs the visitors’ gaze toward an external space, beyond the one created by Finch—a landscape visible through the darkened window at the back of the room.
A situation designed to be observed through the multicolored filter that separates Finch’s installation from its surroundings.
Through this visor, we hope to allow the observation of a parallel world, like a reflection in a pond—
a world where time, too, is suspended.
it is a sensory and perceptual experience that grazes the edges of physical limits. The audience is invited to contemplate the transformations that time imposes on bodies and on the landscape in which they may ultimately dissolve.
Happy Sisyphuses, offering a glimpse of the beauty of time flowing.
